HANGING MIST

The Warehouse Artist Lofts is an urban infill project that unites two buildings, one new and one historic. Hanging Mist lives in the courtyard that connects the two.

Painted on perforated aluminum panels, the artwork is inspired by the material itself. With 50% openness, the material, like the artwork is ephemeral and dynamic.

We used multiple techniques to create different textures and depth of color. Soft fields of color were sprayed with an air-brush, brooms became large brushes, and a bath of blue glaze created a luminous azure gradient. We lay the 72, 4’x8’ aluminum panels in the studio parking lot again and again to line up marks, check in on our composition, and develop the painting as a whole.

The finished paintings act as semi-transparent walls, defining the central courtyard space while allowing light and air to flow through. Depending on the light, the artwork appears vivid and opaque, or soft and transparent — sometimes disappearing almost entirely into the architecture.
