CONTAGIOUS COLOR
When we set out to create a gateway mural for the 12th Street underpass in downtown Sacramento, we talked to people who regularly walk through the tunnel about what they would like to see. Many emphasized the need for light. One man expressed that the artwork should feel like music.
We painted a bright mural with vibrant colors and bold painterly form. We worked with the local utility company to update the lighting with most powerful, energy-efficient fixtures. While improving this space we developed a close relationship with the tunnel and those who used it most.
The light that spills in from both ends of the long dark tunnel illuminates people who travel through the space in unexpectedly beautiful ways. The fields of abstract color act as backdrops to small moments in daily life. At night, the painted walls glow, creating the illusion of colored lights.
