SEED SPIRES

Seed Spires are living sculptures made of compressed earth, sown with native plant seeds. Over time, the geometric forms sprout, grow, erode, and bloom to nourish our dwindling pollinators.

Seed Spires are ephemeral, impermanent, ever-changing, and responsive to nature’s cycles. The spires sprout and bloom to provide nectar to local pollinators, but first and foremost, we consider them symbols— a demonstration and invitation to re-imagine our urban landscapes. Seed Spires are intended to highlight the need for intentional and nourishing urban habitats to feed our pollinators.

We need wild, boisterous, native habitats tucked into every roadside, park, backyard and stoop. Collectively we can help conserve and restore biodiversity in our cities, protect pollinators, cool our streets, and invite a connection to nature into our daily lives.

According to Invertebrate Conservation Organization, Xerces Society, even the tiniest backyard or balcony can be a stopover for those smallest of creatures upon whom we all depend.

Sofia Laçin & Hennessy Christophel

For over a decade, Sofia and Hennessy have been creating site-specific artwork, centered on local environments —connecting people to a sense of bioregional place.

They envisioned Seed Spires as a way to explore nature-centric work that is responsive to the environment and actively benefits the local ecosystem.
