WOVEN CITY

How do you create an artwork that represents an entire city?

Woven City is grounded in the geographic context of Mountain View and is brought to life with a collection of detailed metal figures. At the unveiling, visitors approached the wall and delighted in finding figures that reminded them of themselves. One couple walked their cat to the event, and was pleased to find a cat-walker depicted in the artwork.

The layered artwork depicts Mountain View as a tapestry nestled between the San Francisco Bay and Santa Cruz Mountains. The abstract map is oriented to the viewer—with the San Francisco Bay to the left and the Santa Cruz Mountains to the right of the City Center.

The design features over 400 unique metal figures installed over the painted map. Each figure was hand-drawn, water-jet cut, polished and sealed. The collection of individual figures celebrates civic diversity as well as the wide variety of activities housed at the community center.

The polished figures layer in stark contrast with the textured wall surface. During the day the 3D figures reflect the shifting colors of the sky and eventually, the golden hour glow. At night, busy traffic lights bounce off the reflective metal surfaces in red, yellow green and white.
