The Sun & The Egret
The Sun & The Egret is the story of a lagoon and the life it holds. A peaceful egret shrouded in willows, a plover nest with three speckled eggs, and a collection of rare wildflowers are a few of the moments depicted in this collection of entangled ecosystems, united beneath a central sun.
This 200 foot piece animates the Library Learning Center in Carlsbad, a generous community space which provides an ecosystem of resources to families. We looked for parallel stories from the surrounding nature that embody the resource rich, caring environment of the Library Learning Center. With this in mind we turned to the lagoons of Carlsbad, a strikingly beautiful and unique feature of the landscape. The lagoons collect water from the region, where it pools together and becomes a verdant habitat and nurturing oasis for a diverse community of creatures.
The rich brown paint echoes the buildings architectural features. The cream-colored smooth stucco reminded us of book pages, and inspired an inky hand drawn illustration style that connects to the library within.
