FLOURISH

Within the sparkling clean and fluorescently lit interior of a hospital, an open-air atrium is a sanctuary of natural light and a sense of the outdoors. This atrium, positioned at the hospital's entry, is a welcoming moment of color and nature as patients, staff and visitors enter. We designed a mural that would create a verdant glow through layers of natural texture and joyful color.

As we built up layers of washy greens and blues, cheerfully colorful grasses and reeds, patients and staff watched through the glass as our painting came to life. We painted abstract dappled light and flora from the surrounding riparian habitat of the nearby creek.

Since we were enclosed in glass no one could speak to us, but that didn’t stop communication. Heart hands, prayer hands, and enthusiastic thumbs up were gestures and energy that spoke louder than words.

With hand-drawn native plants and vibrant colors, Flourish seeks to capture the healing and life-affirming powers of nature.
We dedicate this mural to the tireless efforts of all who have chosen to spend their lives keeping us healthy and alive.
