FLOCK + THERMO DYNAMICS

Our vision was to make a sculpture that looked like a flock of birds emerging from the landscape. As we honed the concept we realized FLOCK is about linking the earth with light from the sky.

FLOCK is the first of two installations we designed for a new life science research campus in Torrey Pines, San Diego. This collection of 150 mirror polished stainless steel ‘birds’ sits right at the campus entrance, capturing a moment of lift off.

As the landscaping matures, the sculpture will become more nestled into the plantings. Shadowy greens reflect on the undersides of their wings, while the wing tops reflect shifting blues and vivid sunsets. At dusk the ‘birds’ appear as fractured light scattered across the slope.

As visitors to the campus walk into the center of the complex, they’ll discover our second installation - a mural series that explores the First, Second and Third laws of Thermodynamics.

These grand pillar-like forms present an opportunity to express core scientific concepts. The Laws of Thermodynamics control interactions of everything in the universe - regardless of scale. These rules stretch across every form of science known to humankind.

We always say that each brushstroke feels like an act of love. These cylindrical forms were a rare treat that allowed us to complete our painting process with a literal embrace.
