Waterwise Community Center

The Waterwise Community Center in Montclair, CA is a gift to the community - offering lush native gardens to explore, engaging exhibits, and hands-on workshops. We were thrilled work with this wonderful team to bring some of the magic of their gardens to the inside of this hub of native plant education.

This collaboration started with a tour of their gardens to collect images to draw from. One of the goals for this mural was to capture the abundance of the garden by incorporating a wide diversity of species into the mural design.

The building interior is inspired by a canyon, full of earthy tones of sand and rust. To bring some brightness into the space our mural started with a coat of light, bright blue. Then, we mapped out the colorful leaf and flower forms, turning the formerly blank wall into a lush coloring book.

Waterwise Community Center staff and members of their Youth Volunteer Cohort joined us for a painting day. Every painter contributed a song to create an impromptu playlist. We painted, listened to music, ate pizza, and got to know each other. By the end of the day the wall was filled in with beautiful color.

To complete the mural, we added delicate leaf veins, flower stamens and insects. Our favorite is the leaf-cutter bee that cuts perfect circles out of the redbud leaves.
